90's Tbird/Probe racecar advice

I have owned 2 90's Tbirds, one '94/3.8v6, and one '97/4.6v8. I love these cars, for the money nothing handles, drives, or looks as good. The other good thing is that you can find a nice one for under 1k. I want to race on the salt, initially in stock (or nearly) form, what would be the best all around engine/trans combo? 3.8SC, 4.6l, 5l push rod (preferably w/carb on top), AOD trans, 5sp manual, etc.? I also have had thoughts of putting drive train components in the back end of a probe, (leaving the originals in place) to make a twin engine, AWD car. Is the Probe a suitable platform? Thanks for your thoughts.

Having owned 6 or 7 Birds (89-93) and a few cougars (same) I would say stick with the t bird.
I had a super coupe with a hammering rod, i put the wheels and the twin exhaust on another 93 , light blue(nicer body and interior Than the SC had) stuck a 5.0 and AOD from a lincoln in it , with carb, and duraspark from the u pullit. Also front half of exhaust was 5.0 stang with shorty headers. Ran good, sounded good to. Motor mounts were the pricey part. The 92-93 was the only years (IIRC) the 5.0 was put in as a V 8 option, they went to the 4.6 next.I had to go to the blu oval store to find the correct mounts. Also had to use a pretty low profile air cleaner on the carb to clear the hood.
All in all, in ran pretty sweet on the street, would fry tires, haul butt and got good mileage . Also being a larger kinda fella, the bird was more comfortable and easier to get in and out of.
