92 Chevy 1500 w/t rearend Swap
I got a 1992 Chevy 1500 (Silverado) W/T 2WD with a 2.83 rearend I think (my glovebox sticker is worn out to where I cant make out the codes) and a 200 transmission (swapping out for a 700r4 due to various issues). My problem lies within that itself, the rearend is all about heavy duty and therefore kills my gas milage. I would love to put a 3.73 or higher rearend under it, ideally a camaro posi rearend.
So my question is: Is it possible to put a posi camaro rear end under my truck? Also, what all would be involved in such a task? Since I assume it won't be a simple drop and go procedure.
IF the camaro rear end won't it, can I use a standard s10 rear end or should I just scrounge around until I find another silverado rear end with 3.73 or higher gears?
3.73 is a very common ratio in mid 90's chevy 1/2 tons, a lot of them even came with factory lockers. That'd be a bolt in deal. Some people complain that the lockers are not very strong but my own experience with them (three very high mileage vehicles) has been good.
A 1/2 ton rear isnt heavy duty. Also a 3.73 rear end will make the engine turn more RPM s using more fuel. You are going in the wrong direction.
If you want better mileage than 15 or 16 that the chevy will give, then you need to buy a toyota 4 cylinder pickup.
If you want mileage from the chevy fix the rear thats in it, (Probably a 3.07 or 2.73) and keep the engine tuned well, and drive it easy. ,You may get 16 MPG.maybe 17 on the highway.
