I obviously don't know much about transmissions. I did check the fluid level was ok but smell a little burnt. I just want to know if this is a major repair (Tranny replace or overhaul)or if possible just a minor repair( Solenoids or Valve body repair?)
how many miles are on the transmission? has it had any service or repair work recently? any leaks coming from the trans to cause a low fluid condition that could cause a slip?
for this year trans, it only has 2 solenoids, 1 for the torque converter clutch (lockup) and the other is for overdrive, the first 3 gears are still hydraulic like the old torqueflites.
the direct drum is for 3rd gear, and theres not much you can do except pull the trans and get it rebuilt. you have already mentioned the fluid is burnt, and with an internal problem, a rebuild would be the best course of action.
