94 chevy 1500 tranny problem..

First I would like to say hello and what a great site!

I have a 94 Chevy 1500 with a 5.7l and a shifting problem. When I put the truck into OD or D the trans wont shift out of 1st gear. but it will go into second gear when I do it manually on the column. It will not go into a higher gear from that point on. I want to know if it is a electronic problem or if it is a mechanical problem. I don't want to pull the trans if its not necessary. But.... I think it might have to happen. It does go into reverse no problem.

Miles on the transmission? Original trans If known?

Does the speed-O work?

cheeck engine lite on in the dash?

There is a large round electrical connector on the passenger side of trans... just above pan rail.

If you unplug that connector , the trans should default to 3rd gear with shifter in OD or D ..

Or pul the proper fuse from the panel that feeds the trans power.

A quality scanner than read more than simple codes would help too

possibly the Vehicle Speed Sensor located on the tail of the trans or the tail of the transfer case if it is 4 wheel drive.

its a 2wd, that round plug on the passanger side might have been unpluged, its loose for sure. I took it out an plugged it back in and I will try and see if there is a problem still. I will also try pulling the fuse that feeds the trans power. As for the speed sensor. I just put a different one in, the old one was leaking from the tail, the o-ring was gone out of it.

i also noticed that the speed-o bounces when it is in park and the truck is running, but when it starts to move the speed-o seems to work fine

Has it gotten better when you changed the vehicle speed sensor? I would relate the speedo bouncing to the vehicle speed sensor
