94 chevy 305 distributor install

I am trying to reinstall my distributor in my 305 motor but am having a problem. I have brought # 1 cylinder to the top on compresion stoke and droped my distributor in to line up with number one plug but it will not seat all the way. I can get it to seat all the way but the rotor is pointing two plugs futher. Any help would be appriciated.
Thank You

The oil pump shaft needs to be turned..

Take a long screwdriver, stick it down the distributor hole........and index the shaft so that the distributor will go down in the proper place...........
