94 ranger stripped distrib gear, set base timing?

ok well so we got this 94 ranger in here and well the kid that owns it is from carbondale and is stranded up here until i get this thing going again for him if nothing else is wrong with it anyways

over the years ive heard of distrib gears that wear and strip

and well ive never come across one ever

until now.

it really fooled me when it showed good compression and good fuel but only a spark every now and then from a plug wire

so i tried another ICM

and of course that didnt change anything

so i was like *** is going on here

saw something on the internet about distrib gears stripping and it reminded me, so i went ahead and checked the rotation of it with the crank and it seemed ok, until i picked up on the distib shaft and found that i could rotate it!

uh oh..

so yeah i got a good used distrib from tyhe junkyard sitting here and im about to set it to number one TDC of the CS

now, on the harness to the ICM there are two red wires coming out of it there and a gray shunt thing plugged into a smaller black connector just for these two wires.

are these the wires for setting distrib timing to zero? do you set these fords to zero degrees base timing?

if not then how do you set base timing on these? what do i need to unplug or ground?

if theres anything else i need to know then tell me now

this is the style with pickup magnet in the distrib, and the ICM is on rad support behind driver headlamp

1994 ranger 3.0

thanks

lemme check... actually, they do need indexed, and 3.0's are known for eating the distributors/ cam syncs. usually they stop the oil pump drive and lock it all up... there is a way to index it manually, but I'm pretty sure theres a tool also

figured it out finally almost a couple hours ago wow it was fun

nice that they put that damn timing mark line on the balancer but it has nothing to do with setting the distrib timing or TDC #1

bastards..

running good , just got back from a drive in it

thanks
