95 Chevy 2500 4x4

I just got a call from a guy with a weird problem.
He says he starts his truck up and its like its in Drive.
The speedo starts moving as its still in Park.
If he shifts to Drive it doesn't move although when he puts it back in park he hears a grinding or ratchetting sound.

The VSS would be located in the transfer case on a 4x4, correct?
Output shaft turning in Park?

Any thoughts?

I don't know what model transfer he has but I would suspect the transfer drive chain is broke. What does it do when he puts it 4 wheel drive?

Oh yeah.

He said it moves about 10 feet and then stops and freewheels.

Transfer case problem. Not VSS.

or differential. the output shaft on the t-case is where the vss gets it signal. it could be t-case, but if the speedo is moving when in gear and its not going anywhere, then the drive shaft needs to be watched to verify whether its t-case or rear diff.
