95 protege tail lights

ok my girlfreinds protege's tail lights arent working. the brake lights work as well as the turn signals. this leads me to believe it might just be a fuse or something. but i've been looking all over and cant find any diagrams or anything. does anyone know what the problem is? i know its not the bulbs due to the fact that the brake lights come on. i know in my 92 camaro when the blinkers went out it was just a blinker fuse thing. anyone???

Do you have power and grounds back at the tail light bulbs? If you haven't checked yet, thats the place to start. Do you have front running lights when the lights are on? Don't think that just because you have brake lights that the bulbs are good. Don't over look the simple things. Start with this and give the answers and I'm sure we can help.

Doc here,

First off..Your Tail lamps and your Brake lamp/Turn-signals are two separate circuits, fuses and filaments.

Tail lamps are a simple matter of checking as Steve said, Grounds, (If Brake/Turns work it's probably OK) and tail power from the fuse and switch.

Check the Fuse marked tail lamps, for an open . Check with a METER, not an eyeball..or just replace it.If you have power there, your wire is open between the switch and the sockets.

well that sounds about right. but she ( my girlfriend ) said something about the wires behind the radio being messed up and that what she thinks caused it. i havnet got my hands on it yet so i dont know. but the fuse and then the grounds were the first things i was going to check. and the fusable links. but you say i should start at the back and work my way forward?

Doc here,

I seem to remember something about the Mazda Tail system..

From another post about hooking up trailer lamps..AND...

If I remember Correctly, the Turns are a separate, Yellow lenses, and Stop Tail , are reds..and Both Separate from each other (which was the problem for trailer Isolation..) Does this sound about right?

Do this first, Turn on the flasher left and then right, then see what lamp that is..Then step on the brake, and see if it isn't in a separate lamp bucket..If it's that way, it differs from the standard Turn / Brake / Tail system as the brake lamps do not go through the steering column, AND..Don't share a Filament with the Turnsignals..All three Then are Isolated circuits.

Next pull the RED lense..turn on the tail lights, remove the bulb, and VERY carefully locate The Socket Pad (s) in the socket with a DVOM Probe, set For DCV, Scale V X 50 or higher, and ground, see if power is present at the pad (s) ..

If so , set your meter for OHMS , Scale R X 1, Calibrated for 000, and measure the socket BODY to a good Body Ground on the car..

It should read 000..If not your grounds are Faulty at the sockets..

If you didn't Get 12 volts at the socket pad (s) , your fuse is open OR the harness is cut or unplugged between the switch and the lamps.

The FIRST easiest thing to do is check the fuse..
