96 Chev 2500 Tranmission?

Just purchased a 96 Chev Pick Up 2500 with a 5.7 4 x 4 for a runaround truck (right after my son totaled my 01 2500 HD in purchased new) anyway. When I purchased it I checked the trany fluid and it was very clean and no clutch smell. After driving is a bit, two things seemed to happen, would not shift out of 1st gear and the speedometer would stop working. If you ran it or shut it down it would start working again. Now when I step on the brakes, the speedometer and tach, go up and down. Is this electrical or mechanical?? An Help would be greatly appreciated. Yes did a lot of racing in the 60's THANKS C. Richard

Will be a 4L60E Trans E=Electronic controlled.
It does sound like an electrical problem. If the Speedo doesn't work on these they wont shift. I'd check all the electrical connections 1st. They're also known to have problems when the Ignition switch gets worn.

Unless it's a 5.0 or 4.3 LD, it should be a 4L80E in the 2500, right?

I missed the 2500. Probably is a 4L80E.
