96 Chevy p/w won't start, help please
I know this is my first post, however I really need some help. I have a 1996 Chevy C1500. It was running poorly, I took it to a local mechanic for diagnostics. I was told it needed a fuel pump. I was quoted $350.00. I decided to fix it myself, I dropped the tank, changed the pump, added a new screen. I replaced the tank and guess what? No start. I have gas, spark and if I shoot some starter stuff in the TBI is will start and then die once it burns off the starter fluid. What did I miss? I took off the lines from the back of the throttle body and I have gas. Is there something I missed?

If some one has some suggestions, it would be helpful.

No start
Is the fuel under pressure to the intake? Maybe a restricted fuel filter instead of a pump out? Check all fuses-- inj1, inj2.
When you turn the key on do you hear the pump run for a few seconds? If not check fuel pump relay. If it runs while pouring fuel in the throttle body I do not think you have a PCM problem, or module trigger problem from the distributor, however it is not impossible to loose a PCM injector drive circuit.
Is this a Throttle Body unit or a Muiti-port unit? Any Service engine soon light?

96 Chevy won't start
I installed a new filter, however, I will check the injector fuses. It is a TBI and I have not idiot lights. It was dying at stops lights and won't run with A/C on. I pulled down the tank again to make sure I installed the new pump correctly. I wondered if I tripped something.

No start
If you find a blown fuse check the wiring harness at the injectors and make sure they have no exposed wiring that the air cleaner might be blowing when it is put on.
If you find no blown fuses, If you look by the fuel pump relay you will find a single red wire with a black connector. That is a test lead. If you apply 12v to it the pump will run. If it runs then the wiring to the pump is okay. But this vehicle since it was running before I just don't see any Relay of PCM problems.
If you have fuel under pressure, spark, injector signal, then you may have a problem with injectors stopped up. When you pulled the tank was it good & clean inside? Fuel look good, no signs of water or anything else?
Very seldom have I had to replace injectors unless they were contaminated from bad fuel (excessive water or someone dumping other chemicals in the tank). You might want to take a fuel sample in a clean glass jar and let it sit for a while to see if it has anything in it.
When they tested your pump did they do it with a fuel gauge? Had it completley quit running or just running poorly? Pull a plug and see if it's burning clean or it appears to been burning something else.

Just so I'm sure, TBI, not VORTEC, right?

Another thing to check is the pickup in the distributor. I had one come into the shop, similar problem, and the pickup was totally fubar, but you couldn't tell unless you pulled the rotor off.
