I have a '96 Monte Carlo Z34 with the 3.4 DOHC, it has around 104,000 miles. Just recently it started being sluggish sputtering during acceleration. I took it to the shop and they installed a purge valve, O2 sensor, spark plugs and a new gas cap. It still sputters, I thought it might be bad gas? I put some Heet in the tank and ran it though and it still runs bad, hardly any power off idle at all. I did check to see of the mechanic did all of the work he said and yes the plugs and everything are new. I'm thinking possibly fuel injectors?
I sugest to plug a Snap On Scanner on the car and check for trouble codes and so on.Then a leak down test on the cylinders to diagnose for possible internal problems.Does it have correct fuel pressure?
When I took it to the shop they did that. The service engine light comes on and flashes and the manual said that means "missfire has occured" How can I check the fuel pressure, I'm assuming it's Ok but it wouldn't hurt to check. Thanks, Paul
Ok Paul. There is a valve on the fuel rail at some point.Could be near the fuel pressure regulator.Check pressure with the engine running and after priming only,to be sure the system is sealing well.
But after what you said it seems more likely that it is ignition related.Does this engine have a distributor or is DIS type?
When is the last time the fuel filter was changed? PO300 Random cylinder misfire can be set from a restricted fuel filter.
The plugs that were supposed to have been changed, you know the Plenium chamber has to be taken off on the 3.4 DOHC to gain access to the back plugs. Did it look like a new Plenium Gasket? The 3.4 is a good running engine but when it comes time to work on them they are a nightmare.
No distributor. The gasket looks new. I trust the shop that did the work very well, they have been in business for over 30 years and everyone I asked said take it there, yes they are a pain to work on. The guy supposedly put a new fuel filter on it.
Here's what the ticket says
-Spark plugs $60.96
-Fuel filter $22.02
-PCV valve $4.22
-Gas Cap $8.79
-Plenium Gasket $2.24
-Upper Gasket $1.90
-EGA Purge Valve $31.92
-Scan and test systems $38.00
Pretty expensive set of plugs.
