96 Z28 shift problems

My 96 Z28 will not shift 1st or drive, the other gears shift fine and there is no slippage when they engage. I do know that there are two solenoids in the tranny but is there anything else I should be checking before pulling that pan?
If so can someone point me in the right direction of where to locate them and if anyone shares or has cured this problem please fill me in I'm anxious to cure the problem. Thanks bobby

Shift probs

The car will move forward just as it would normally but the car will start out in 2nd gear, shift fine to 3rd but won't engage overdrive.
Shifts up and down fine, if I put selector in 1st it will only start in 2nd also.

from what i see you explaining, brings me a curiosity question, have you had the pcm scanned for codes? there should be a shift solenoid code in the system if it has a shift solenoid problem.

Throttle Position Sensor

Hey GJ, Maybe a wild shot, but on my daily driver pickup I get an occasional problem with the throttle blades gumming up. This stops the throttle blades from fully closing. With the TPS signal telling the PCM the throttle is partially open, the 4l60e will not downshift to first at a stop then trys to take off in second gear. Mine does it typically when coming to a stop, then taking off again. I clean the throttle body with a good dose of Berryman B12, then it works fine for about a year until it gets cruddy again. Its done this about 3 times since I've owned it. Its a maybe on yours? olnolan

Is it possible that you are in "limp home" mode? I have read that this usually limits you to 2 gears.

there really is no "limp" mode on a 4l60e, if theres no power going down to the trans, it will have 3rd gear only.
the other transmissions out there typically have 1 gear "limp mode" operation, like the front wheel drive chrysler a604, when its in "limp mode", its 2nd gear only. also, the late model nissans, when they go into "limp mode", they stay in whatever gear its in when the fault occours.

Problem - "Shifts into gear harshly, car feels sluggish off the line, No 1st, 4th or Torque Converter Control (TCC) lockup available, Manual 2nd, 3rd and Reverse are only available gears, CEL is on"

Symptoms - "Transmission is either in limp-home mode or has lost electrical power. If there are lots of error codes in the PCM, check the under-hood fuse that powers the Transmission, and if it pops again, look for a short in that circuit like an O2 sensor harness touching exhaust. Otherwise, check PCM codes for a particular fault in the Transmission causing the PCM to put it in limp-home mode."

Possible Repair - "check the under-hood fuse that powers the Transmission"

The excerpt above can be found about 2/3 of the way down the page. I am not sure if it is correct, but this is where i originally got my info.

Respectfully

Ken

in order for the trans to have anything but 3rd gear, the trans must have power. shift solenoid "b" must come on to apply 2nd. see pic
