Some times the pinion gear must be driven out (back) with a hammer and brass drift punch.... be careful, the teeth edges are sharp

I rebuilt a 98 Bronco axle last week and spent an hour beating the pinion out with a five pound sledge. The threads on the pinion were killed but I was replacing the ring and pinion anyway. For some reason, the 8.8 will get rust between the outer bearing cone and the pinion stem. Heating the cup and spraying with oil should help.
