98 astro 4l60e what swaps out?

Hey fellows,
I have a 98astro and they say only the 98-99 4l60e works for it? I'm wondering if I use another year because I don't have the tools to do the rebuild or the $$ to pay for a rebuild unless its like the cost of a used tranny. I can find alot of other years but the 98-99 are tough to find. I'm just wondering which ones (4l60e) I could use and what all would have to do to get away with the swap?..The engine mounted to it is the 4.3vortec.

The tranny barely pulls forward and has virtually no reverse. The fluid is dark and smells burnt.

What is the difference to the 98-99 4l60e compared to other years?

Thank You for any and all help you can lend me...Take Care, Kris

is this a AWD vehicle?

Your trans should be a 3 piece case unit...the bell housing unbolts

You will need to check the length of th e shift shaft from the tranny... there are short and long shafts. Long shaft is for the MLPS on the tranny

there are minor differences from a v-8 trans to a 4.3 v-6 trans , but the v-8 will bolt to the 4.3

EDIT;... there was a change of converters, bell housing and input shafts in 1999 - 2000 model yrs.... this would be the reason the 4.3 is limited to the 98 - 99 trans.

buying a used tranny of the electronic design is a real crap-shoot... good luck

Its not AWD...What could I expect to pay (approx) for a complete rebuild with me pulling and installing it afterwards?

I do not quote prices since there are many variables from shop to shop in different states....

perhaps there is an Indiana member here that can add to this.
