Just had my 1998 Tahoe 2 wheel drive, 4 door, totaled. Hit in front of front wheels from the right side. I've settled with the insurance company, and will keep it for a parts donor.I have a 68 SWB Chevy truck that I plan to rebuild for street use. How far can I go getting parts off of the Tahoe. Whole frame? Front suspension? Just drive line?
Hopefully someone on the board has some experience with this.
Thanks
You can basically use the entire driveline from the 98. The EFI 98 engine will make a very good driver in the 68, as will the computer controlled overdrive. The 98 Tahoe uses some fairly complex inputs to it's computer (VCM), such as steering wheel position sensor. All those that you will not be using on your 68 can be fooled though. You could also get an aftermarke computer to run the EFI and controll the transmission, that will simplify things greatly.
Thanks............How do you fool the computer when you take out components like the steering? I want to use the most parts I can from the Tahoe. I may take a few measurements to see if a frame swap is possible, but most everything I've seen in the past says to stay with the old frame.
I'd like to use A/C, gauges, etc. I might have to fab a new dash to do that....
I've been told that the front buckets and console are a bolt in.
I wonder if the Tahoe gas tank can be mounted under the bed?
I can't even get on the project for a while, still putting finishing touches on new garage and house remodel. So there's time for planning.
When using aftermarket computer, are you talking about using a different (aftermarket) wiring harness?
I think I would be tempted to use EVERYTHING from the Tahoe. Frame, suspension, interior (including the steering column), wire harness, gages, dash. Just use the sheet metal from the 68. Would turn it into a real nice daily driver truck!
I do want to use everything possible, including the frame, but I'm wondering if anybody on the board has done it. I'm almost sure the wheelbase of the Tahoe is longer, and that the cab mounts are different. I'm probably several months before I can get them both in the garage....Just starting to do the homework.
