The reason he did not list cars from the late 80's and 90's is .........Ford did not make any in those later years. Ford started the 9" in 1957. The last one was in 1984 in a Pickup I believe. 1979 for Ford passenger cars.

31 spline center sections came in High Horse cars and some trucks. Lincolns too. Beter off to buy new not abused. You can change 28 to 31 fairly easy.

Alot of ford PUs used the 31spline axels, when looking in the bone yards look at center of the axel flange the 28 are flat and most have 2 dimples, 31s are dished in.This is were the tire bolts on.And all the 60s T Birds and most SWs,XLs Happy Hunting

Most rears will have a tag bolted to it. About the size of a Army dog tag. The tag will tell you if it is 28 or 31.

If you are not worried about the gear, just buy a Aluminum center section and a Detroit Locker, add your choice of gears and GO!

I have to disagree with one of the answers submitted. No disrespect intended but, when looking a axles the 31 spline is flat while the 28 spline is recessed. I have not had much trouble finding center sections, open or posi, in either 8 or 9inch. Try a local race shop.

While the description of the axle ends was correct(flat for 31's and inset for the 28's) in the truck rearends that isn't always the case, for some reason the truck axles,28 & 31, are both flat and need to be pulled for positive ID.I think it may have been to cut production costs.

Woodz, I'm afraid the real reason is that Ford just never wanted anything to make sense. Never did and I don't think they ever will.
But I still luv em.

You want to look at 4x4 rear ends for 31 spline axels. In the mid 70's
