Vehicle history: Jeep was bought with a burnt trans, wouldnt move. Removed trans, found front band worn through the lining, and metal backing. (band was in two pieces). Direct (front) clutch toasted, steels and frictions were cone shaped. Direct drum, and band were replaced, with complete O/H of the remaining wear parts.

After reinstallation, trans would lose direct (third) gear, and reverse when hot. Vehicle still has compression braking, so I know the problem is with the direct clutch again.

Valve body replaced with reman unit, same problem. By the time I get the valve body out to air check, I feel it has cooled enough to reseal, and I hear the clutch engaging.

Any ideas where I should go next? I am about to pull the trans back out, but I fear I will get it out, and find that everything LOOKS fine.
