Accel HEI cap

My son bought a used Accel HEI distributor and I noticed the center electrode in the cap that contacts the rotor is below the plastic surround, don't see how it could make contact with rotor except by arching. Shouldn't that center electrode be above the surround? The stock HEI is, so unless Accel intended it to ark and not make physical contact I guess the cap is bad?

I forgot to ask but can you buy just that center electrode? The distributor doesn't have many miles on it but that rotor to cap contact just looks wrong.

re: Hei cap

Yes they're available, some replacement coils come with one. I know MSD makes one that has very low resistance for their spark controllers.

Take the coil out I'd warrant that who ever put it together put the little rubber insulator under it in first then the electrode, should be the otherway around. electrode first insulator on top of it and then the coil is bolted ontop of it all.

Thanks guys, I did take a look under the coil and the insulator is on top so it looks right. I guess the electrode could have burned away but if it did it did so in a very neat way, it just looks short, not burned. I'll check it again.
Thanks.

Doc here,

Could also be the spring follower has collapsed, or someone forgot to install it on the carbon pick up..

Although they do wear out first usually..

You might want to compare it against a stock GM HEI pick up..they may be the same..
