Adding Overflow Tank to Cooling System

I have a Walker Radiator in my '39 Olds street rod. It has a 12lb cap and the overflow discharges to the ground.

Can I just add an overflow tank to the overflow hose and have a closed system?

If I add one, I don't see how the coolant can be sucked back into the radiator as it cools down. The overflow nipple is above where the cap seals down on the the lip of the fill neck.

Will I need a special cap or do all caps have a way to let the coolant be sucked back in?

John

Yes you can add one to your set-up, What i did was bought one from jegs and it is for either way just a over-flow or it can be hooked up to recirculate the coolant back to the radiator. Here is what i am using , http://www.jegs.com/p/JEGS/JEGS-Hexa...56127/10002/-1 . It comes with the vent for the top and the fitting for the bottom to hook your hose to and then it will recirculate.

That looks like a basic overflow tank similar to what I have bought. Just don't understand how the coolant gets back into the radiator past the pressure cap.

Haven't installed mine yet to see if it works by magic somehow.

As the engine cools off after shutting it down, the coolant cools and contracts which creates a slight vacuum. There is a small check valve in the center of the radiator cap that allows coolant from the overflow tank to be sucked back into the system when this happens.
