Adjusting valves
 

I just rebuilt a 396 big block chevy, has new cam & lifters. Engine is completely back together, my question is, whats the best way to adjust the valves for the 1st time? Engine is out of the car. Hydrolic cam.

Bring each cylinder to TDC...adjust to zero lash......give extra 1/2 turn. That should set them so you can start it.

When starting it first time, keep the RPMs up about 2000 for at least 20 min to break in cam.

To adjust with it running, back off each rocker until it ticks. Tighten until it goes away, then give it another 1/2 turn.

Thanks, is there any other way to adjust valves without running engine, very messy?

If you look on the Edelbrock website, they have an installation guide which tells how to adjust valves properly. I have installed cams before using their method as well as the running method and I preferr the "zero lash and half turn" method best.

I looked on their website for the installation guide for adj cams but didn't see it. I emailed them & a guy asked alot of questions & then wanted the model # of cam. I gave it to him but it was a Howards cam. He wrote back & sd thats something you have to ask Howards Cam.

Some people can be difficult, but I'm sure Edelbrock is just trying to CYA :mad:
I've attached the Edelbrock cam install instructions. It's in 3 languages, just in case you're in a foreign country and need to adjust your valves :D

If the cam is hot with high lift and stiff springs you should definately break it in with lighter springs.....BBCs will eat the cam up if the spring pressures are high
