Advice on dealing with peeled off stickers

On my truck, the PO put some "4x4" decals on the box sides which have since peeled off and taken the paint with them, leaving some straight primer areas.

I'm going to do a scuff and shoot since it's just a beater truck but the paint looks awful, but what's the best way to deal with these areas? Presumably if I just paint right over them they'll show right through.

Should I just shoot some primer on those spots and then block them down? Sand the whole area down to primer and feather the edges?

if the stickers peeled the paint off, then the rest of the paint has to be taken off. It is delaminating. You will be able to take a razor blade scraper and scrape the paint right off. It will be pretty easy. You will have to do this until the paint starts getting hard to remove, THEN you can feather it out and paint. If you DONT remove the paint, what ever you paint on top WILL come off. It is actually a pretty common thing for paint to do this. Especially on GM trucks in the late 80's-90s. Some colors of dodges will do it too, especially white.

To be fair, the paint only lifted under the stickers that were hit with a pressure washer.. the ones that I peeled by hand (to finish them off) came off clean. The paint seems pretty solid elsewhere. But I'll do what you suggest, for sure.

start right where the sticker peeled off the paint. It might only go a few inches or it may go down the whole bed side. If it dont go very far, then great. If it does, then its best to know now instead of later after its painted.

One more question - once I feather this out, will the area show through the new paint? Seems like it's going to be a visible dip.

Yes you will still see it. you will have to primer it then block it smooth, then your ready for paint.

On the spots where the stickers didnt peel off the paint ,you need to prime that too or you'll see the outline of the sticker through the paint.
Anytime you remove stickers or graphics the surface has to be primed ,if you dont you'll see it through the new paint ....
