AFR heads
 
hey guys, just picked up my first true hot rod. a 1971 puke green nova owned by an old lady, never abused. hold your applause please. by the way im 17 yrs old if you were wondering, and im not sure which way to go with this. i dont know if i want to do a high revving 327 with 2 fours on the eddy low pro street manifold, or a torquey 383 with the whole eddy rpm top end. no matter what i choose, i want to use Air flow research heads. i actually have 3 questions. number one: 327 or 383? number two: anyone that has a set of AFR's on their rod, i'd like to know how you like them. number three: if I go with the 327, should i use the 190cc's or 195's, and if i go with the 383 should i go 190 or 195. sorry about the long post, but i would really appreciate any help i can get. id like to get to know some of you regulars out there so respond back. thanks

I think you should choose the 383. In your local of so-cal it shouldn't be too hard to find a 350 block and the scat stroker 9000 series cranks are getting cheaper and cheaper....flat top pistons....AFR 195s. Victor Jr. intake 750 vacuum secondary carb and 1"3/4 headers....to answer your question pretty much any of the aluminum heads for chevies are great. Most are $1200.00 assembled! The bad thing is you're going to need to spend as much in the car as you put in the motor! Good trans/rear and tight suspension to put the power to the ground. Pick torque over top end HP on the street and you will be waay ahead of the guy you're racing by the time he hits the powerband on his cam.

I have AFR 190cc aluminum heads with 68cc chambers on my GM replacement 350. I originally used an Edelbrock Performer intake with an Edelbrock 650cfm carb. Ran good but not what I expected. I switched to an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap and a Holley 770cfm Street Avenger. MAJOR difference. Runs very strong yet cruises well with no bad manners.

As to running a 327 versus a 383; definitely go with the 383! You will not be disapointed.

if you go with the 383 and you can afford an extra 150 bucks go 210 race ready i have them both 195-210.the 210 runs so much stronger

I'm running some AFR 185s on my SBF 331 stroker.

I would have to agree with corenle, if you go with the 383 I would use 195-210, I'm using 210s on a 327 they are a great set of heads. All depending on the set up you want. If you want a good street engine with low end torque 195s if you wan that high rev deap breathing race track machine I would go 210. And probably a torque converter with a stall speed around 3000-3500.
But this is just my opnion.

Why build anything less than a 350? You want power, and cubic inches is the best way to get it.

I have the 195cc street head 68cc straight plugs on my 10.3:1 383. Just arrived 2 weeks ago. http://members.cox.net/cad/cars.htm
Here is your only problem with AFR. If you dont find someone with these heads in stock, you will need to wait approximately 10-12 weeks. Why? AFR doesn't build you head until you order it. Next issue, 210cc race head only comes in 76cc combustion chamber (this will lower your compression ratio---call your piston mfg to determine what cc head you should order). It will cost more to have them milled. The 210 comes stock with roller valve springs and you will need to indicate if you want that downgraded or you will flatten a flat tappet cam in no time.
The 210 only comes in an angle plug configuration, straight plug is a special order (non-returnable).
195 head may not clear domed pistons.
195 comes in 68 or 74cc configuration.
Also, use ARP head bolts.
If you must have AFR, call around for stock. Also, call AFR direct for advice. They will assist and give you their recommendation.
Also, make sure the roller rockers you have/are buying will clear the large valve springs that these heads come with.
