aftermarket air condtioner

I have had no luck in my search on this and other sites so I am asking for your help.

I have a 79 GMC shortbed and looking for a place to purchase an aftermarket A/C unit. Are these still being manufactured and where can I buy one?

This is for a pickup that did not originally have A/C.

Many thanks for your help.

You can see what I did in my 54 Chevy pickup via my site link (below my sig) ... or, if you want an under-the-dash unit, RB's Auto sells the Hot Rod Air evaporator unit for AC only, or for AC & Heat.

Since you don't have air in your truck yet, you'd also need a condenser, a compressor and a dryer ... you could pull those things out of another vehicle (scrap yard), except for the dryer -- you should always put a NEW dryer in.

We sell Hot Rod Air complete kits for $795 with free shipping, to give you an idea of where to start. Hot Rod Air is a break off company of Vintage Air (some say the aftermarket leader in air condtioning). From what i was told, the ex vice president (or something like that) from Vintage Air tried to make some changes on the design of their units, they didnt agree so he quit and started his own company, Hot Rod Air. Dont know if this is true or not, but ive been told that by a few people.

I have the vintage air units in two cars, 36 Pontiac and 57 Chevy Wagon and both work excellent, just my 2 cents worth.

Ouch!!!

I bought the Old Air Hurricane unit and installed it myself ... it cost me $500 for the interior package.

I already had a condenser and compressor in my truck, so I left those alone and after I installed the interior kit I took the truck to a guy and had him install a new dryer, new hoses and fittings, and then he evacuated and charged the system ... that cost another $300.

You can see pics and details of my install at my site (link below sig).

Like I said before, we sell complete kits (evaporator, condensor, compressor, dryer, controls, hoses, fittings...), all the parts you need to get you cool for $795, with free shipping. That seems to be the average for aftermarket COMPLETE kits. A person with decent mechanical skills should be able to install a kit in a good weekend.

That's a good price, too -- considering it cost me $800 anyway ... and I had the hoses and fittings installed at a shop. I don't have tools for making the fittings, so I went that route instead of attempting it myself.

At any rate, it's a GREAT system! "Hurricane" is a befitting name, too!
