aftermarket shifters

im sure some of yall use them, like a b &m or something. i was just wondering if they came with all the nessisary cables, brackets, ect to change a column shift to a floor shift, with a 700r4 tranny. also does it come with brackets to mount the cable to the tranny? i now there is different shifters, some mention cables and brackets, some dont, so mention not for use with reverse shift thing(brain fart) also not sure if the 700r4 is forward or reverse
thamx to anyone who can shed some light!

re: aftermarket shifters

I've never put one on a 700r4 but all the B&M kits I've seen are universal and included all the brackets necessary to install on any tranny. In fact, you'll be throwing lots of the brackets outs once you're done with the install. Even the bottom of the line $70 Mr.Gasket universal shifter comes with brackets for nearly every trans you can imagine or enough parts to make it fit one way or another.

re: aftermarket shifters

I'll second cboy's post, I have had to install a few aftermarket automatic shifters from Hurst, B&M, and a couple knock-off brandX's, and they all came with too much stuff for what was necessary for 1 single vehicle.

NO the 700R4 is not a reverse shift trans, not in stock form. I have a B&M light truck Megashifter in my 88 full size Chevy with a 700R4 trans. I don't really care for it that much. I have had many problems with shifting. Still cant shift all the way into 1st. I just ordered a Locar Nostalgia shifter from Ramchargers, for my V8 S-10 the 12" one. I think it will work great. I went with the Locar because it offered a lock out where the others don't. Plus it should give it the manual shift look (unless you look closer and see no clutch pedal) It should be in for pick up in 2 days or so. And like cboy and M&M said most shifters come with more than enough brackets.

Reverse shifter

In answer to your question.

On a power glide, 350, or 400. The cable runs out the front of the shifter, through the floor, turns to the right to the back of the tranny, over the tail shaft, and then curves back to the front left to the linkage. The cable is around 5 feet long.

A reverse shifter, the cable comes out the back of the shifter, through the floor, loops back to the front left linkage. The cable is about 2 feet long.

The reverse shifter is easier to install but costs more money because the reverse gate and shorter cable are added options.

re: aftermarket shifters

I think what was being referred to is a reverse manual valve body. And no, the factory 700 is not set up that way.

aftermarket shifters

1931steve, hey let me know how that Lokar shifter works on your s10. I put a v8 in my 84 s10 and was wondering about the Lokar shifter,I like the looks and the fact it takes up so little room which you dont have a lot of in these trucks. Thanks
