Ahh yes, choosing gears

I have a 1967 Chevelle and I am wondering about what gears I should put in my rear end. I am running 3.33's and my car currently and it will pratically idle in overdrive at 65mph. I am running a 283 and I am estimating it's horsepower output to be around 275. I am running a 700R4 transmission and my top speed is around 100mph, maybe a little more but my speedometer is not set correctly yet.

So my question is, do I put in 3.90's or 4.11's? Or is that too high and I should just run 3.73's instead? I still need a decent highway speed but the car is used mostly for crusing around town, not a whole lot of highway miles. I would like the car to run around 70mph comfortably.

What gears do I use?

I need a reply ASAP because the car is going in this Friday

Cheers

I would use the 3.73's. With your 700r, you should be fine @ 70.

There are various rpm/gear calculators on the net to assist you with this subject. I got one from this website in the Knowledge base area. On my street rod I will be using a 700R4 with a 3:70 rear axle ration. The OD ratio in OD is .7, with 30" rear tires at 70mph it will be taching about 2100rpm.

I once put some 4:11's in my GTO ...it was real painful just running around. Don't get me wrong, it was FUN on the on-ramp to the freeway, but painful from there on. I have a set of 3:73 in my vette now, and I wouldn't change them for anything!(were talking city driving here) ...My 2 cents. ...Mark
