Air compressor

So it's time I upgrade my compressor. I have some paint jobs coming up and mine just doesn't keep up. What is the min. CFM required to spray a car? I was looking at a unit at Home Depot the other day that has an air delivery 11.5/10.2 SCFM @ 40/90 PSI. That seems like it would be just right for what I want. Any thoughts? Here's a link to the compressor I am thinking about.

That looks like a nice unit though the 11cfm@40psi is the upper limit for most HVLP spay guns.

It will work for a home shop but you will still run out of air with some tools especially when doing body work. If you plan to paint with it then it will handle a conventional paint gun just fine but most HVLP guns will be cutting it close and you will need to plan your spray pattern carefully to keep from running out of air on large panels.

Other tools that may or may not work so good.

Air file (board sander)- fair

impact wrench- excellent

air chisel-good

air grinder-fair to poor

DA sander-very poor

Blasting cabinet-fair to poor

sandblaster-fair to poor

conventional paint gun-excellent

HVLP paint gun-good to fair

air cutoff tool or die grinder- very poor

These ratings are strictly just my opinion so don't take it for anything more than that. While that outfit is a little light on CFM it is about what you will normally find in a home shop and with a bit of planing ahead when using the air hungry tools you should be able to do most anything you need with it, just that you may have to let it catch up a few times when using some of them.

Thanks, that was just the info I was after. It is for a home shop so that is why I don't want to spend $1000 on one. I like my HVLP for final spraying but I could use my normal gun on big jobs. Planning out the panels is what I have to do now with my little compressor so I should do better with this one. Thanks again.

What do you mean by upper limit? As in that's the least amount of air I can get by with? What kind of pressure should I have for an HVLP gun? Thanks
