I have decide that is the one I am going to get. I just have to finish building the storage shed in the back yard so that I can clean my garage out to have a place to put it.

2-stage

Air compressors are always a good subject. I dealt with an underpowered single stage campbell-hausfeld for years. Finally spent the money on an Ingersol-rand 2-stage, 60 gallon and I would not go back. Cost me $999 and was way over what I wanted to spend, but I am very glad that I did. I used to cuss my old compressor everytime that I used it. Now, I can keep up with every tool that I use, including pressure blasting. I am not heavy by any means into "air" tools, but when I need something it is nice to know that I have it. If funds are tight, I would seriously consider cancelling HBO, etc. and purchase a 2-stage quality compressor over time. You will not regret it.

I have been saving for some time to be able to get this and I don't really watch tv... but I understand where you are coming from... biggest problem is that I have to spend part of the money I have saved on building a storage shed, which I have to have to clean my garage out. I may just wait till next year to get one if I have to. I really wanted to start digging into my chevelle this year stripping it and everything.. but what you are saying makes sense...

The way to tell if a compressor is a single stage or two stage is that there is a tube, usually finned, that goes from from one cylinder into the the other. A single stage has an output tube that goes directly from the head into the tank. On a two stage the air is compressed by the primary cylinder & pumped into the secondary cylinder, compressed again, and then output into the tank. If you look at a used compressor check the tank thoroughly. A tank is as expensive as an entire compressor. I used a single stage Sanborn 5hp 60 gallon for over 10 years. It still runs fine, and did all that I asked of it. I didn't like waiting for it to catch up occasionally, but it was all I could afford at the time. The other thing to be aware of is that the single stage will create more heat, because it will run longer, which will create more potential moisture in your lines. So, get a good air/oil filter system and plumb the compressor as far from your first drop as possible.

Thanks Toyman, You made it easy to identify. I have a 28 yr. old single stage 3hp Campbell Hausfeld.
