air gap intake and iowa winter

Well, I was wanting to get the air gap intake for my 400sbc, but I live in iowa with cold winters and I am worried about terrible starting and cold weather driving. Is there a way to help it warm up quicker too? I want to buy an intake off of ebay to save costs and the only ones are air gaps or the small low rise. I have a 400 sbc 062 vortec heads and 280h cam. So I don't know which I would benefit the most from. Thanks!

If you're going to be driving during the winter get the Edelbrock Performer or an equivalent.

get the regular rpm intake. just avoid the air gap rpm (as you already know).

or convert to efi (megasqurit.com)

Edelbrock 7116 Performer RPM Vortec is the intake to use. Takes a square-flange carb. Or a Professional Products Crosswind Vortec 52027 polished or 52028 satin.
Weiand no longer makes the big plenum Stealth intake.
Personally, I'd use a carb with a manual choke.

To make matters worse your vortec heads have no exhaust gas cross over under the carb and obviously neither would the intake. I have the same issue with the performer eps intake, vortec heads, edelbrock with manual choke.

I use a block heater, just plug it in for a couple hours and it makes a world of difference, usually installs in place of the frost plug just by the oil filter or go with an inline version in the heater hose.

Yep it is that time of year, but man my engine makes some gnarly power with all that cold air

What do you mean they don't make the big plenum stealth. I know summit sells the stealth, but is this a milder version now?

The original Stealth is #8016, which Weiand no longer makes. If you shop around, you can still find them for sale new....the carburetor pad height on the 8016 is 4.18" front, 4.50" rear (high-rise, dual-plane).

The 8016 is comparable to the Edelbrock 7101, Holley 300-36 (not to be confused with the Holley 300-36S) and the Professional Products 52020 (polished), 52021 (satin) and 52022 (real-chrome).
Here's a dyno comparison between the 7101 and the 52020....

If using L31 heads, use Edelbrock 7116 or Professional Products Crosswind Vortec 52027 (polished) or 52028 (satin).

It's a matter of opening up the top end of the motor with a good high-rise intake manifold and 14x3 or 14x4 air cleaner and letting it breathe out through a good set of tuned headers with X or H pipe, properly sized pipes and mufflers. A high-rise intake is good for about 40 hp over a low-rise. Tuned headers are good for at least 50 hp over cast iron log manifolds.

I heard that there was a winter insulation kit available for the AirGap manifolds made especially for Iowa winters. It comes in either the R20 or R40 packages depending on if you live in North or South Iowa. (snicker)

Just make sure you are getting a intake for vortec heads, and what TechInspector said X2 to that.
