Post air induction ??

Hello I just bought a 1980 Z28 today, but the air induction "flaps" will not open, from what I have researched about the car, is they are supposta open when you kick in the 4 barrels ?? is it an electrical linkage ..... the car is stock and in rough shape, but I just wanted something to play arund with... I guess you get what you pay for LOL a $500.00 camaro

hi, check your vaccum hoses from the flap to the carb, they may be cracked. if it seems cracked or worn change it anyway, also check to see if there's any wires leading to it, if there is ,get someone to check and see if it is in working order.
there's not much to it, its only a flap.i bet your racing brother could fix it in a half hour.
ps. waddya think of slant six? i felt sorry for him, thinking he was some lonely sad mixed up kid.
well maybe he is.lol.

If you have a Quadrajet, those secondary flaps are GM's version of Holley's vacuum secondaries. The secondary thorttle plates on the Quad are opened by manual linkage like on a double pumper, opening those monster secondaries. If the flappers weren't there, you would suffer severe bog every time you punched the trottle 'cause few SBCs can use that much carb, even at 6000rpm! The flaps are then opened based on engine demand (vacuum in the manifold causes higher air flow > pressure drop across the flaps and they begin to open). Note that the flaps are overbalanced on one side of the flapper shaft so there is a force unbalance which allows one side of the flap to be twisted down. When you are fooling with the engine in the garage, you can't generate enough load on the engine just by reving it to cause the flaps to open. As long as they are free to move with a little finger shove, they will work fine in service.

Thanks you guys for the advice, I took it out for a little "burn" and I opened up those flaps and almost recieved my first speeding ticket <img src="graemlins/sweat.gif" border="0" alt="[sweat]" /> but it was well worth it....
I was pretty impressed at how well the car went, for being a stock motor... and it is more streetable then my other camaro. My crazy brother is pretty busy, most of the time, and I want to suprise him and show him what a girl can do.... LOL ok ok maby not much yet but I am learning.
