Yup there are a lot of ways to do it. Some you need a good shade tree to perform. I have used your method to take heads apart in a hurry though I think he is looking for somthing to speed up his engine building in a professional manor.
Also guys who do race motors usually spend a lot of time getting the correct installed valve spring height and the air operated spring compressor rules there.
Sears has a decent manual valve spring compressor for somthing like 30.00 but when you are trying to hold the keepers with one hand, relese the lever on the compressor with the other and hold the compressor in place with your chest it gets to be a pain after a while. If you only do an engine every year or so it is fine but if you are doing heads on a daily or weekly basis you tend to want the tools that make it easier and save the finger tips.

great help and advice.

when i searched for this item, i was not sure what to call it. When i did search on google, all types of crazy things came up. Sometimes the internet has tooo much info.

thanks alot to you all.

As what what i plan to use it for: Well definately valve springs... but in the shop we use the c clamps soo often i figured a nice air powered unit would be great.

One feature that would be bad ***; if the pressure could be set so that the clamp would always squeeze to this point, instead of an extention adjustment.

That would be the best but it can not happen. The tool would open the same distance but for the spring pressure difference going from spring set to spring set.
