Post Alloy wheels corrosion. What to do?

On my GM alloy wheels I noticed that corrosion has started. It appears to be under a layer of plastic or it could be a clear coat. What should I do? Scrape off the coating and use steel wool on the affected areas. Then what? Spray them with a clear coat of something? What should I use?

That coating is thermal setting powder coating and the only way to restore the wheels if there is corrosion under the coating is to remove it completely. Good quality paint and epoxy remover from the hardware store will do the job very well. Once the coating is removed you have some choices. You can have the wheels professionally polished or you can try it yourself but unless you have the equipment it is really hard work. For that matter, it's hard work if you do have the equipment! Then you can have them recoated in clear or just keep them waxed. You can have them chromed. Or you can scotch brite them for a brushed look.
