Alt Gauge Reading

Hello all I have a 1984 Dodge 1 ton 318 carb fuel pump on block etc old school my problem is with ait gauge reading. have new batt. had alt rebuilt. some times gauge won,t read charge then all at once it show,s its chargeing. There are times when i have taken off the pos cable truck will keep runing other times it will kill engine. Took alt off went back to alt shop they checked it it was fine. Drive down the road it show,s its chargeing. Then look down at gauge not chareging comes and goes. ? any ideas. Thanks guys Great site.

By "alt" gauge do you mean Amp gauge or do you mean alternator ?

If you have an amp gauge read this.
