altering stock HEI

Hey fellas. I need to limit the amount of mechanical advance in my HEI distributor so I can run more intitial advance. Has anybody done this before? How did you do it? What is the rule of thumb as to how much less advance you get by shortening the slots a said distance? Is it worth it or do I bite the bullet and buy a MSD or comparable aftermarket distributor. Thanks in advance (no pun intended)!

yea, just use the advance curve tunig kit, yours from any autozone, orielys or advance for like 8 bucks, and they all stock them. I actually just recently had to go through mine and limit the mechanical as well as the vaccum (damn 10.5:1 iron headed engine that I "have" to get to run on 87 just to prove a point). A well placed washer is good for the vaccum side.

PS don't try to run a 10.5:1 engine on 87, its a real bich to tune. And if you do, pick a bigger cam than the one you have planned, trust me, its probably not big enough.

What piston/head clearance did you use and what's the intake closing point of the cam you used?

Any shop with a distributor machine can do it. The slots get brazed to close them up a bit and then it's test, trim the brazing, test, trim the brazing...........so on and so forth until it's right. You can do it at home if you don't mind R&R'ing the distributor a dozen times to get it right.

Thank you for your response. Now the trick is to find somebody with a distributor machine!
