Alternate alternator

Howdy! Things are slowly finding a home on my project, but when I found all the bits to install the OE alternator it was obvious that the thing is just plain ugly. Any recommendations for a smaller unit, somewhere in the 100amp range? Also, any good reason not to run the water pump belt direct from the crank pulley, rather than the cobbled up idler pulley in the attached pic?
