Alternator bracket

Hi...

I have a 1960 Corvette with a 327 and ram horn exhausts. The driver's side ram horn has the mounting holes for an alternator and that is where my alternator is mounted... In 1983 when I purchased the car it had the original generator and headers which I removed...

However the alternator twist slightly and I'm thinking I am missing a bracket that connects to the bottom of the alternator to help keep it in line... Refer to photo below and yellow arrow and red circle...

Here's another photo from above and you can see the adjustment bracket for the alternator.

Any tips or comments would be much appreciated....

Thanks

Ken

Yea most mounting brackets have a tang for the front of the pivot bolt. There were allot of differant brackets best bet is to either go to a U-Pull-It and hunt for something or buy a bracket kit. Or order the correct bracket from a vette parts supplier.

Yes you need to add the correct bracket to hold the alternator true to the crank. You are correct, there is a part of the bracket missing in the photo.

Unless you're trying to keep it original, you could go aftermarket, ZOOPS has nice brackets for just about any accessory or application.

You could use a Header Power Bracket with the appropriate spacers.

For an extended bracket:

or for a regular bracket:

The set up used on 'Vettes w/ramshorn exhaust looks like the image below, but if you don't have that manifold, just use the bracket like used from about '72-back on trucks w/ramshorns.

I found this photo on E-bay and it is what my Ram Horns look like... There are no thread holes on the side for an an alternator, they are facing front....

Anyone know what bracket would be used on these Ram Horns?

thanks kindly....

There were a couple different manifolds with forward holes.

On a '65 Vette with A/C, there is a bracket that extends from the water pump and meets the lower hole of the manifold. The alternator is bolted to the manifold through the upper hole and the other bracket that extends from the water pump sits in front of the alternator wedging the base of the alternator between the bracket and manifold. A J-bar is used to tension the belt.

But the '65 Vette exhaust manifold has the top hole recessed from the bottom hole.

On manifolds with the holes as you show for the Impala, the engine typically uses the long water pump so the alternator sits further forward.

No Corvettes ever used the long water pump, but there may have been other year Corvettes that did find some way to use that manifold forward mount so check the assembly diagrams for the various years to see if you can find what will work. You may find that these other years that used that manifold had other brackets that used accessory bolt holes in the heads or on the intake manifold on the 350s.

I seem to remember having one wit hforward bolt holes and if I did it was for a Corvette and probably a '70. But it may have been a bit different.

HERE is one in an eBay ad. It goes from the water pump to the alternator to stabilize it.

Yes, that's the one. I looked at my assembly manual and yes, a similar bracket was used on the '70 Corvette with the forward bolt holes.

I thought that it looked familiar so went up in the loft and looked around. This is the piece that you need. You can have it for $25 including the shipping in the Continental US.

You can see how it wedges the alternator between the manifold and the bracket at the upper hole while the lower hole bolts into the manifold to stabilize it. The other hole goes to the water pump bolt.

Actually, the way you currently have it, you've moved the alternator ~3/8" forward (thickness of the bracket) and outwards a bit from the stock arrangement because the bottom hole of the alternator should be in the upper manifold bolt hole. Hope this helps.

So this is how it would connect - hole 1 to bolt 1, hole 2 to bolt 2, hole 3 to water pump?
