Alternator Light

I have a 5.0 in a older truck and I am trying to install and alt light as a back up to my voltmeter. I have a 12 volt light in the circuit but it burns dim when the engine starts and runs, bright when the key is on and the engine is not running. In the schematic for this circuitry it show a resistor in this light wire. Is this resistor part of the Voltage Regulator or Alternator or is it in the wire some where. I show 14 volts at the voltmeter when the engine is running. If I rev the engine the light is still burning dim. Any suggestions?

I misunderstood the post the first time I read through it , I got lost at the alt. light part as a back up. Thought you were talking alternator, so the information was off base, real conversations are so much easier.

You have what is referred to as a shunt ammeter and/or light. It must have the resistor.

Alt light

What size resistor would work for this? Does it make a difference? The wire I am using is the wire in the original wiring diagram but it was cut on the firewall side of the loom so I am not sure what was under the dash or on the dash panel.
