Alternator Question

I recently pulled the oldsmobile 307 out of my 78 Trans Am and I am planning to drop in a 454 out of a 1986 one ton truck and I was going to reuse the alternator. My question is are all alternators universal because it doesn't seem to fit in the 454 bracket. It is a 3 wire alternator but i have no idea what year the olds engine is. Thanks in advance for any replies

When you say it does not seem to fit the 454 bracket, what problem are you having?

Can you post a couple pictures? One of the 307 alternator (3) wire connector, and one of the 454 bracket.

Yes I can post post some pictures but I am at school right now so I'll have to wait til Friday. Well there is a long bolt where the alternator pivots and the bolt i have is not long enough. That could probably be fixed by simply getting a longer bolt and finding a spacer, but the other bolt on top where it slides back and forth for adjustment doesnt fit through the bracket and I have to force the alternator into the gap between the front and the rear of the bracket. Also when i try to put the alt. in place the fan hits the bracket. Sorry if this is confusing I will post pics as soon as possible.

I still am in question of why it will not mount. It does sound to me that you are on the right track to make it work.

I am also wondering if the 454 is a serpentine belt system, or a solid alternator bracket, with a removable adjustment bracket, or not.

The 454 should have a internal voltage regulator with a 2 wire connection, along with a battery charge post lead. This system is easy to wire up to work on any vehicle where space permits.

The 2 wire regulator plug is available at almost every parts store, and the battery lead could be hooked to the 'battery' post on the starter, or the battery it's self.

This system can also be adapted to work with only one (switched) wire to the regulator, and the battery charge lead. Simple? Yes! You can even buy them specially wired to do this.

Need pic's, and think on this.
