Alternator Wiring

Doc helped me but i think i may have not given him the correct info
the alternator has a 2 wire coupling that plugs in. one is red and one is white

i am assuming that the red wire goes to the key side of the ignition. what is the purpose of the white wire and what should it be wired to.

Those r my new questions and thanks doc for your rapid response and advise.

The red wire goes to the battery for field winding power, usually hooks in at the starter large stud. The white wire is the idiot light. The white wire goes to one side of the light and a switched power source goes to the other side.

Internal only...

What was said is correct, if yours is internally regulated.
Make sure the plug and receptacle have FLAT side-by-side blades, and not vetical side-by-side (like an AC wall plug). The latter wires up to an external voltage regulator.
