altinator overcharging

Guys this is a first for me . I've never seen an alternator over charge. voltage should be 15vlts under load at highway speeds but is upwards of 17.5 vlts. Its been in the car for 4 months and barring factory defect I'm wondering what could have toasted the internal regulator. Any suggestions.

Doc here,

One of the biggest killers of Semiconductors is heat....second most to poor QC when constructed..

Some Alternators don't work right out of the box...a high percentage of them..

Proper bonding of connections and location of the remote sensing wire also contribute to how often the regulator "Cycles" be sure the wires are clean, tight, have star washers as well as lock washers , properly burnished, and you have a good ground buss system..

That is the best environment you can provide for the charging system..
