Aluminum '41 Willys coupe

You may have seen the pictures around the net of Walt Austin's all aluminum
willys coupe.... complete with ghost flames! I was curious if he is doing any racing at all now, so I went to his site.

I was shocked to see they are offering these bodies for sale!!! Check it out...

Too nice! Let's see, stainless frame, aluminum body, no hint of pricing. Prolly a $100g roller...

I don't doubt that a few would be interested. They are the ones to whom price is less of an issue. My hat is off to them, since most of them earned it.

Until the next election happens, most of us will be buying more carefully. {:-(

That AutoBlog link sez it's "expected" to go on sale in 2006....

I guess I'm over being wow'd by high priced automotive jewelry intended to be a an accessory like a pair Gucci loafers.

How many guys would have this car built then drive it? Darn few... and why have it if you don't drive it. I mean drive it... not in and out of a trailer but drive it to the swap meet, the parts store and across country.

Sadly I doubt one of these could stand the rigors of daily use... and why have it if you don't drive it.

I think the guys building their own cars , in their own home shops, are more in touch with the hobby today.

Actually there have always been high-end builders in the hobby. Some guys want to be involved, but may lack the skills... the time... or the knowledge to build their own. If they have the financial means to be involved, more power to them. I personally was never intimidated by guys who could spend more. I just enjoyed participating in my own way... and was glad to share our mutual passion for these cars.

It's also true that the backbone of the hobby has always been the do-it-yourselfers. I don't see the "jewelry" as anything that prevents the mainstream from doing exactly what they want. The upscale market is just another part of it all... and adds more people and interest to the activities.
