Aluminum heads, iron block, what head gasket?

Hey guys I'm wondering what kind of head gasket you need to use on a SBC build with aluminum heads? I have heard you need to use to MLS (multi-layer steel) gaskets to allow movement between the two disimilar metals but the problem is I need a gasket that is about 0.020" compressed thickness and can't find any MLS gaskets of this compressed thickness. Is there any other type of gaskets that work (maybe the expensive copper gaskets) or does anyone know of where I can find the right gasket in around a 0.020" compressed thickness?

Your not going to find one. GM has an .028" thick, that is as close as you are going to get. Smarter move is to deck the block to allow a correct decent thickness aluminum head compatable gasket, side benefit is you get a nice perfectly flat surface in the bargain, a big plus with aluminum heads.

The other benefit you get, if you cut the decks by registering off the main saddle, is that the decks no longer slope front to rear or rear to front and you stand a better chance of making the same static compression ratio on all 8 holes. Oh yeah, and the intake manifold stands a better chance of sealing up at the head ports.

Cometic will make you a gasket. Expect to pay about $80-100 each.
