I have had great results with POR 20 Aluminum paint. You can brush or spray it,costs about 20 bucks for 8oz but goes a long, long way.I have a can that has been through 6 winters freezing in the garage and the paint is still good!
Sounds like you are on the right track. I once had the brilliant idea to clearcoat my aluminum intake. Bad idea. It yellowed real bad and I ended up spraying it with aluminum paint.
I took my intake to work and had it shot peened which does the same thing as bead blasting. Afterwards I simply clear coated it and it didn`t discolor. The trick to the trade is don`t touch it on the up side where it`s gonna be sprayed at before spraying it. IIRC, I used plasti coat spray paint clear coat.
I did the same think to my serpentine brackets and they came out perfect.
