This is the Introduction forum....It would be best to ask your question over in the Engine forum.

they have a kit that you put in the engine that helps. Also, the AMC V8's don't have a good oil return, so the pan can get sucked dry. so never let it get low. www.theamcforum.com would be a good place to find out information

re: AMC 401 oil system mods.

Low pressure is usually caused by a worn oil pump cavity. With the pump built body part of the timing cover that can be a problem! I'd contact Bull Tear and get a checked replacement cover from them (www.bulltear.com), or Alfano Performance (e-mail Nick Alfano, 71amx@sbcglobal.net). There have been problems with the aftermarket timing covers not aligning the distributor properly and wearing the drive gears prematurely. Both of those guys have the knowledge and equipment to check the covers first, and do! So they charge a little more -- you're less likely to have gear problems and have to do it all over again!

Both have some other oil pump info. An easy "fix" is to always run the engine at least 1/2 quart over full (a whole quart is fine -- that's what AMC spec'd for police engine, oil pan was same size as all factory V-8s, just a different baffle!). That might fix your problem, indicating the oil pump is fine. Drain back from the heads at extended high speed running is the culprit, no easy way to fix that! If the heads come off though, clean up and slightly enlarge the drain back areas, especially in the back.
