Annoying DJs...

I can't stand DJs that chatter right through the intro of a song then cut it off the minute the vocals end. I think some stations make a policy of this and it drives me nuts. Some of them are so bad that I've thought about calling them up and asking what the heck they're thinking.

One particular station in my area advertises more songs per hour than any other station. One day I noticed a couple songs that seemed to be a little off beat. After listening closely I determined that they might have the playback speed turned up just enough that most people don't notice but still allowed them to squeeze another song in. I'm not sure of this but I have my suspicions.

Whatever happened to quality radio stations?

Corporate America, that's what.

Some of the ones around here do the same thing, just like they did way back when. And now they saturate the night-time air with the most lame, insulting commercials, over and over again. Get-rich-quick schemes, bankruptcy in disguise, steel building "sales", same crap they hide in the back of the Thrifty Nickel.

I like how some songs you download say radio edit, but they still sound completly different.
Like one godsmack song thats kinda slow "Running Blind". If I listen to it on my own, its got some drawn out parts where they don't have lyrics. If I hear it on the radio, those parts of the song are skipped over.
You'd think that radio stations would try to make listener's happier since all these new ways of music devices are out now, like the satellite radio and Ipods and all that.

I heard "Light My Fire" by The Doors a while back and they cut the song off before the keyboard solo even started...

They have been cutting songs in half and speeding them up for years. It is a drag, I know. Alot of the songs have the guitar or drum solos cut out so as to appeal to those with short attention spans. Seems like nothing is longer than 3 minutes on the radio anymore. I want to hear all 22 minutes of dark star or all 45 minutes of mountain jam by the allman bros. Even 11 minutes of cortez the killer would be good ...But NO!

About 3 years ago my wife got me a subscription to satellite radio. It ain't perfect, but it beats the hell out of regular radio. It costs about 10.00 a month for sirius. I have heard that XM is about the same. No commercials, the DJ's are pretty laid back on the rock channels, and they have an alright playlist. It gets a bit repetitive after about 2 weeks, but it is still better than airwave playlists. The little box will plug into your shop stereo or car or whatever with some adapto plugs and it has good quality sound.
Yes they play cortez the killer , and if you listen to the jam station you can hear dark star too, ( I don't listen to "jam on" tho...I HATE phish

I like the country channels too.

I can't say that they play anything good on any of the other channels. I don't have enough musical education to accurately judge them.

Used to be my favorite radio station was KPIG radio. http://www.kpig.com/
Because they are local and were cool. They are the descendant station of the original KFAT. http://www.kfat.com/ KPIG is also the first radio station to live stream their broadcast on the web, doing it since 1995) That is what we played in the fiberglass shop, I left my stereo there when I quit, and it is still on KPIG every day. The owner is 72 years old and won't listen to anything else. ( I guess I marred him for life )

But now even the pig sucks. The ads and self promotion have just gotten out of hand.

CD's are ok, but it gets tedious changing them and buying new ones so you don't have to hear the same crap over and over.

I actually have a record player and a small record collection at my shop for when nothing will suit me but my own stuff.

It would be nice if these guys were still around

Later, mikey

There is one radio station up here that does a good job of not blabbering in the middle of songs. They still play a lot of commercials and play way too much Elton John but they do play the the full length versions of songs like Free Bird, Dreams I'll Never See or Shine on You Crazy Diamond, they even play all of Alices Restaurant from time to time.

That's the "top 40 radio" version that was always played on the lone rock-&-roll AM station here (there was no FM back then) when the song first came out. If you could pick up a good AM station from Little Rock or Fort Worth or Chicago, usually late at night, you could hear the too-long-for-top-40 version, which lasted 6 whole minutes .

I just got my wife an XM radio and subscription for Christmas. I like satellite radio way better than regular radio. The advertising is getting way out of hand both on radio and television. I drive two towns away to have coffee with my dad on the weekends. Not a long distance but around a half hour drive. One station I listen to once in awhile I had on when I left the house. They were advertising but I left it there anyways. I stopped at the ATM, drove thru our town from one end to the other, drove to the next town, through that town, through the country to my dads town and completely through it. Not one song was played. This was at 6:30 in the morning. So I suppose they were running commercials for the morning commuters. A solid half hour of nothing but advertising. Now it seems anymore that you get one song and then 2, 3, 4 or more advertisements. Or you get 6 or 7 minutes of television and 5 or 6 advertisements which equals to about 5 minutes per session. Greed for the almight dollars is taking the enjoyment out of everything. Also what I'd like to know is, in advertising, they probably have a format that they have to go by. Especially in television. Why do they cut a commercial short, and by this I mean it is over right after it starts or why will they run the same commercial 2 and sometimes 3 times, one right after the other. I don't mean the same commercial at different commercial segment, I mean boom, boom, boom. 2 or 3 back to back? Isn't there any advertising guys that are hotrodders that we can tear to shreds here?

As Mikey says, that IS kinda the job of DJs from years ago at the birth of top 40, to TALK and bs and stuff.

Mikey, three minutes huh? How about TWO minutes or less was the norm back in the sixties. Check out some of those Beatles classics, 1:25, 1:48, 1:36.

I have fallen in love with the local Jazz station. It is public radio (yeah I mailed in my 20 bucks membership) and plays NOTHING but music with a little talk about the music. These "DJs" are pure jazz lovers and players and would NEVER talk over a single note! I have gotten so spoiled listening to this station. I get into the car and there is a commercial on my sports station and I hit 91.1 and theres music, EVERY time (well almost). No news, no commercials, no politics, nothing but music and talk about the music. Very cool. And I believe they are streaming... http://www.kcsm.org/jazz91.html

I used to listen to the college stations like KZSU and KUSC. KKUP is another good one. If you send your 20.00 you can get a program guide that has all the scheduling of shows. Those stations don't stick to the same genre of music though, and if you leave them run all day you might hear hawaiian music for 2 hours, poetry reading for 2, NPR for 2, hard rock for 2, avant garde pop smack rap fusion with a middle eastern influences geared towards eskimo buddists living on welfare in poughkeppsie for 2 hours and who knows what.

Sattelite still rules if you don't have enough motivation to get up and change cd's or records and don't want to listen to short songs and long commercials.....,

One of my co-workers worked at a local television for a while, I'll ask him when I go back to work. He accidentally played the wrong commercial and it cost the station several hundred dollars.

I remember when on vacation in the US, I watched a NASCAR race on the Hotel cable TV. It took 30 minutes to show the last two laps of the race. The cars would be shown racing for about 50 yards, then we would be cut to a Sponsor interview in the pits, then a few commercials, then another 50 yards of racing, then the same routine all over again, and again, till finally 30 minutes later we got the last 50 yards over the line, by that time I had slashed my wrists.

PS. I like the way you use the yellow lights over there, to let "Michael" or "Dale", or whoever is the chosen one catch up when it looks like the wrong driver might win.

You know...the DJ's used to be interesting to listen to. First to mind..Wolfman Jack They would toss in some trivia, talk about the artist, etc. Now they crack a quick joke and off to a commercial.

In 1968 we lived in southern calif and we would listen to Wolfman Jack on a radio station with the call letters XERB. 50,000 watts from BAHA, California! I cant remember what kind of stuff he played, I only remember he was fun to listen to.

I read somewhere that he was on another station from Del Rio called XERF.

Wolfman Jack was born in Brooklyn NY. My hometown .
