another 700 question, different vehicle

Have a question on my wifes '86 Caprice. 305, feedback quadrajet, assuming its a 700 trans. She's compaining of sluggish acceleration again. Trans shifts fine in all gears. My questions are:

Do the early 700's lockup in third gear and fourth? (this one seems to go into LU in third)
If so, can I unplug the third gear switch on the VB so it only locks in fourth without hurting anything?
Can it be run in the "D" position in town (not in "OD") without hurting anything?

I guess what i'm trying to do is keep the rpm's up some at low speeds so its a little more driveable instead of being in OD and lockup at 35mph. Kinda muttly!

Thanks.
Mark

Yeah man, I keep my 700R4 in 3rd everywhere in town. On the highway, I don't shift into 4th gear until I'm at 65mph or faster. Because I have a 2.73 rear end right now, so the RPM go too low for my liking.

Leave it in D in town, it won't hurt a thing, and yes mine locks up in 3rd and 4th although I don't know about unplugging the gear switch.

I would just downshift to 3rd in town. The converter lockup affects the cooling circuit quite a bit. The trans will probably produce more heat in town with the converter working more from stop to stop.
