another 700R4 tranny question ??

Are these trannys any good. It appears most of the questions on
this forum are about problems with the 700R4.
My problem is: this is a new tranny (only 600 miles on it). It does
not shift into overdrive. When I pull it down from neutral it only
shifts 3 times. When I start out in low and up shift there is no
change from 3rd to 4th.
Any ideas?
Thanks for the help.

the 700 tranny only shifts 3 times......

1 to 2 = a shift

2 to 3 = a shift

3 to 4th = a shift

which is 3 shifts.

Is that what you are having with your tranny?

There is no shifting from 3 to 4. I would think going from 3rd to
4th gear you should see a drop in the rpms.
Thanks for the reply.

So , you only have 2 shifts.

Does second gear function correctly?

Does 3rd gear seem to hold power good?

Yes, 1,2, and 3 function great. Right now I travel down the
highway in 3rd gear (65mph at 3000 rpms). Some one
mentioned the govenor in the tranny or valve slipage.
What is the repair for that? cost? time?
thanks

govenor and valve slippage is not the problem.

A knowlegable tranny person needs to check the band for wear by pressing in the 2-4 servo cover on the side of the case. This can indicate if the band & drum is worn heavily. IF the servo cover pushes in too far easily , the band & drum are the cause.... or perhaps a band strut is partially pulled through.

The 2-4 servo is a multi stage unit. the servo pin may not be reaching the band for 4th gear , yet the 2nd gear servo can push the apply pin slightly farther which is why 2nd gear functions.

The repair was a mere $392.75. The diagnosis was the detent linkage
was bent and the fail safe check ball was jammed.
The 3/4 shift valve was rusted solid in the VB (what ever that is).
Hopefully, there will be some warranty because it only has 915 miles.
Thanks for the information
