Another boating adventure

So yesterday I went out it lake Martinez in Yuma After some tuning and rejetting the carbs. I came out of the no wake zone and headed north towards the sand bar. I eased up on the throttle and it sounded pretty good with no problems. I got a little excited floored it and after about 2 seconds it's backfired real bad and killed the motor.. I quickly looked for a hole in the motor but everything looked normal.. I got towed to the nearest sand bar and started troubleshooting. I found there was back and forth play on the rotor. After pulling distributer I found 3 and a half teeth broke off the distributer gear. Today I pulled the timing cover to make sure there was no damage to the timing chain and that the bolts in the cam were still tight. I also checked the lash in a my rockers to make sure I didn't have a bent push rod or valve. I'm pretty sure it was run if way to lean and had too much timing. I jetted the carbs up 5 sizes to 73 on the primary and up 2 sizes to 78 on the secondaries. I had the timing locked at 32 degrees and backed it off to 28 degrees and still locked out. I took it back out today to make sure everything was ok.. I took it real easy for a while to make sure I don't Granade the motor. Then we made a couple WOT passes and monitored everything real close. The boat ran solid 80 mph with 2 people in the boat and 84 and some change with only myself in the boat.. Not bad for a small block in a 21 foot boat..

I d be concerned about why those teeth got broke and where they ended up.. Roller Cam? and you say you went 5 sizes to 72? What carb you running.? please more info

Where to start.. I'm pretty sure the distributer gear broke because it leaned out and the motor back fired. After the backfire the motor died completely.. Pretty buzzar if u ask me? The carburetors are Holley boost referenced 600's (2).. Ate first the plugs were pretty good but I was only making about 2-3 lbs of boost at 10.5% underdriven. I Did some research and discovered that have a small bore 6-71 and need to spin it faster to get more boost.. I then swapped the pullies to 10.5 over driven. Before the carbs were 68 primary and 76 secondaries out of the box.. As a precaution I jetted up to 76 and 78.. After running this for another day out I pulled the plugs and it seemed like they were a really warm plug. NGK R5671A-7. But they were still pretty dark on the porcilen. So I but the R5671A-9 in to see how it ran and jetted back down to the 68 and 76.. I went back out just to test and tune and that's when it happened.. Maybe 5 min on the water and it backfired and died.. It was ok if I slowly eased up on the throttle but when I was aggressive then it backfired.. Yes it is a solid roller cam.. Also timing was locked out at 32 which I learned the hard way was too much for 8-10 lbs of boost with pump gas.. It's a little hard because I have been told that jet boat resist detonation a little more because the engine temp stays way down 150-160 range at all times.. And I have aluminum heads.. As far as the pieces to the distributer gear I'm getting ready to yank the motor for the winter because I have a few upgrades I would like to do and I can drop the pan and pull them out.. They looked like they broke clean off.. I figured pieces that big either did damage on the say down or it didn't.. After getting into the oil pan they are harmless.. It stripped 3 and a half teeth off so the distributer would not engage the cam at all.. That's what leads me to believe that they broke clean off.. I did manage to get 2 pieces out with one of the extendable magnets but the other pieces fell all the way down..
