Another Muffler Question?
I am in need of replacing the entire exhaust system under my Malibu, and want to change things a bit.
I currently have a dual bed monolithic catalytic converter, and single outlet exhaust WITH NO MUFFLER, and it is only slightly louder than my Suburban with a complete stock system. It sounds decent, but not throaty enough for the hot rod sound I am looking for. I will start out with the catalytic converter, the Catco 2.5 inch universal is the unit of choice. I will carry the piping straight back on the passenger side similar to the 1991 Camaro and it will enter the single inlet/ dual outlet muffler. I am stalled here as to which of the following SOUNDS the nicest (loudest): FlowTech Afterburner, FlowTech Terminator which happens to say "Bite Me" right on the case, Flowmaster series 80, Hooker Aero Chamber, or the Dynomax Super Turbo. I also would like opinions on where the dual exhaust tips would look the best: Stock Malibu dual exhaust comes out the sides just behind the rear wheelwells at a 45° angle, and may do more good for me for the stock classes I show the car in. OR Straight out the back under the framerails, like you would normally see under the 83-88 Monte carlo SS, and 1991 era Camaro (which is the search example for picking my muffler), even though I like this style more than the side outlet this may eventually bite my butt in the judged car shows. I do not yet have a set of headers picked out, but will when I also find the corresponding replacement Y-pipe to tie them into the exhaust system, unless I can find a set of better flowing cast iron or stainless steel stock manifolds (which again might help out in the judged shows). I currently show my car as stock (maximum 3 modifications), and have the same amount of competition now as I would under the modified class.

I have done more in checking the previously mentioned choices out, and looking on the manufacturers websites.
The Afterburner has a little better sounding sounclip and is $20 cheaper than the Terminator, and the Raptor a little better sounding than that (but not available with single inlet/dual outlet), so now I am even more confused. The afterburner is a direct fit for what I want, but the Raptor will have to be a custom install for dual outlets. The Hooker Aeorchamber sounds exactly like it is between the Afterburner and the Terminator, but is $30 more. Flowtech and and Hooker are both Holley owned, so I will go with the cheaper of the two, the Afterburner is my second choice but because of modifications necessary to make the raptor work in my application, I have to go with the Terminator. Best sounding and I can get it much cheaper online than locally. I checked out the Walker Super Turbo sound clip but it sounded like they were recording it from inside the car, and it didn't have "the bark" I am looking for. But now I have to find a set of tips that will look good at a 45° angle, and talk the wife into the wheels. |

The Dynomax super turbos aren't the loudest muffler. They do have a nice sound however. If you are looking for loud and throaty, flowmasters generally provide that sound. I ran their original 40's and they were quite loud. I grew tired of that sound however, and found that pretty much EVERYONE around here uses flowmaster 40's. I now run some Borlas which as very mellow at idle but have a very loud CRACK when you get on them. Like two mufflers in one. Havent heard another like it around here anyways.
I would run the exhaust out the sides at a 45 like you were thinking and use some angle cut tips. I think angle cut (rolled edge especially) look the best when dumping out the sides. On my truck I chose to run them straight out the back, as generally I see the angled setup on trucks locally, and used some stainless oval tips that have rolled edges. Perhaps you should post some pictures of the side and back end of your ride so we can get an idea of how the setup would work. |

Being that you are going to go angled out the side . . . you'll probably have decent exposure of the tips so you'll want a fairly long tip.
Magnaflow Long Angle Cut - These look great in person. Or, depending on what you like, you could go dual angled out the sides. Borla dual Angle cut - I think these have the potential to be wicked. |

I didn't like the look of the Magnaflow tips, bad first impression.
HOLY COW the Borla tips are more than the rest of the system I am putting on the car at this time, so those are out. I am not looking for a stainless system right now,, but when I do a frame off in a couple years, maybe everything I can get will be stainless. Without the tips and pipe I am looking at around $140 so far. I may just end up making my own tips. I have a custom job for some stainless steel work coming up pretty soon anyway, this wont add much to my metal order. This link is for the Flowtech Terminator sound clip. Here's a pic of the current single outlet. And in diagram form what I have, my factory style option, and what I want to do.

I downloaded a sound clip of the closest configured muffler to what I need from Magnaflows' site, it's not quite what I'm looking for (especially for the price).
I can't find one for my specific application for under $100, and don't want to try and fabricate any more than I have to. I searched for almost two hours for a set of exhaust tips I like and have really found nothing for a budget minded hotrodder there either. Yet. |

Summit sells tips just like the Borlas with rolled edge in polished stainless for about $20 each. I have one on my 04 GMC and it is very nice and high quality.

I searched through most of the couple hundred exhaust tips they have and really found nothing that stood out.
What I am looking for is a tip that is made for the 45º angle side exit I have chosen. Either a single rectangular tip or a dual round outlet tip will do for what I have in mind, but noone has anything like it. I have considered buying a dual outlet tip and cutting it for the angle, but could fabricate something similar for a lot less, it does not have to be chrome. |

do a little research and check out the GM chambered exaust system.it sounds fantastic, you have no mufflers so you lose that excess weight, they make it for your car.go to dream car garage.com and check out the vette they put it on yesterday"sunday",then go to year one i think they sell it.i think jegs does too.i think i am going to go from my hooker areo chambers to.i've never heard anything that sounds better than super trapps and they are tuneable both for perf. and sound but again you have the extra weight and something that will burn out.the chambered exaust won't.

I have to admit some of the ones you guys have provided links for sound nice, but one of two major things are wrong with every one of them.
1. They make nothing that will fit my application without extensive modification. And/Or 2. The price of several hundred more than what I have found, I do not need a stainless exhaust right now. I am looking for "sounds good on a budget". I looked for something for my 2000 Impala to give the impression of the dual exhaust look of the Impala SS, but can't see putting a second muffler on it when a single inlet/dual outlet will do the same thing and sound more aggressive. I got no help on that car over on the Impala forum I belong to. That car has more wrong with the stock exhaust design than you can shake a stick at as far as performance is concerned, but it was a "retirement crowd" marketed car. I looked again at all the exhaust tips I could find in the size I need in Summits' inventory, found three "possibles" but they were ruled out in the end. I will probably have to fabricate what I want for the tips. |
