Another qusetion on door panels

OK a local upholstery guy told me this and I just need to check and make sure. I got some foam backed fabric from him to do the job. I'm working on the '46 Chevy Panel truck and the door panels are all metal. First I've cleaned them off to bare metal and he told me I could just prime and cover them with no problem I'll go along with that, makes sense. But the panels have a embossed design on the bottom of them that will be lost if I just cover them. He didn't have any foam I could get from him but told me I could use extra material with foam backing to build up the area and just cover it like you normally would. That does not sound right to me so I'm asking for a little guidence here on what the right way is. I was going to use some 1/4" foam to build it up and cover it.

Thanks

Since no ones replied yet...I guess ill say how I've seen...(havent done it yet, but plan to eventually.....currently panelless )
From what I've seen on articles here. That's how the designs are put under the upolstry materials (like the flames and chevy emblems, etc). Just layer on another thinner foam design on top of the base foam then upolstry over that. ....closed cell foam....
