Another sick trend?

Wheelie competition? The more the carnage, the bigger the purse? Is this something new? Its like when monster truck racing turned into "freestyle" where they could wreck thier trucks on purpose or the ultimate fighter show where they beat each other to a pulp. I don't get it, I guess I got to get out of the garage more (or maybe not).

Yeah I hear you. Extreme this and extreme that.

It's like for example, what happened to 'real' boxing? Actual toe to toe boxing? Enter extreme fighting- UFC, whatever.

To me it's more trash TV to ignore. Heck I barley watch TV. I like the garage too much.

arrow,
strip owners have been using 'wheelie shows' as a promotion to draw a crowd since I was a kid....

here's just a few of many from "back in the day"...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLwgc...eature=related

the cars in your clip are purpose built for a $$,$$$ first prize annual wheelie competition (CRS=in AL?) that's shown on Speed TV....
(judged on distance/height/ and "wow" factor)

ps: "Little Red Wagon" in my link had the floors cut out so the driver could see the walls when the rear bumper was on the ground to know he was going straight at 100+mph!

Red, I totally understand oldschool "wheelstanders". I'm not so sure your getting the whole jist of it.

These guys are taking thier regular strip cars with no wheelie bars or control for that matter to put on a spectacle. Last year a guy with a Gremlin flippped over on his roof and won the $10,000 prize. More caranage - more screams from the crowd - the better the chance of winning. At least that's how it looks to me.

I don't agree with any disreguard for safety, however,
Drag Racing is a "Spectator Sport" - - -
and they have to feed the hungry Lions, so to speak.

Here's a Mag that a good friend and car buddy sent me
last Spring and it appears that this stuff has been around a long time.

Footnote: I found it funny how they couldn't get the Tri-5's to wheelie very long in the thread video - - - "heavy ?****rds"

Wheelstanding competitions are cool in my book Although, they do get outta control- and flip/wreck some nice cars. Still neat to watch I'd rather see em make a full pass standing 45% than flipping over.

But, what do I know- I'm just one of those UFC loving crazy folks.

Totally get where you are coming from, Arrowhead....It's the same with everything.....Used to be Pro boxing was a big thing....then "phoney" wrestling......Now, it's this "Ultimate Fighting" crap.....The fans want to see someone get killed......The more sadistic and violent the better.......

Don't get me started on video games...................

Ponch- I'm a fan of the UFC and I don't wanna see anyone get killed. I even kinda feel bad for the guys that get knocked out... Anyways- that's off topic.

And YES, guys- pro boxing does still exist! I think...

I'll throw another spin on the 'extreme' stuff.

Take demolition derby for example, I bet those folks are into UFC... Whaddaya think? Personally I despise everything about demolition derbies.

That being said;

The new crop of wheelstanders are essentially a demo derby on a perfectly good track. The same track in most cases that a 'Real' drag car traverses- at 300 some odd MPH. Get 'em the hell off there... WTH are the track officials and/or owners thinking? Are they that desperate for money? (yes) But, WoW the spectators... Bottom line in exchange for safety. NICE. It makes me wonder what Connie Kalitta thinks about some of the stuff going on. Or the Forces'. Or the Coughlins. on and on.

I re-read the above and it is a bit of a rant, but my keyboard doesn't have a backspace button.

Guess who gets to put up with it?....

Nothing like a good light weight or welter weight bout, however, I sure did enjoy watching Kimbo Slice's 14 second fall from Glory the other night
(yes it was EXtreme with Kimbo becoming the EX)

I don't get any enjoyment out of watching some moron do quarter mile long wheelies just for the sake of doing them. Someone, maybe even him, has put thousands into a car - and just to see if he can carry the front wheels 6 feet off the ground is just not interesting. This idiot, with no developed physical skills hops in his mega buck car, then proceeds to dump it??? Even if he isn't (un)lucky enough to dump it over, he is still bending, breaking or destroying a perfectly good race car.

Bringing up the Little Red Wagon - this was a purpose built vehicle, and driven by a skilled operator with hand brake systems to control the direction. The balance of that vehicle was such that it almost pulled a wheelie driving to the line. It wasn't an overpowered formerly daily driver with the town idiot at the wheel.

What happened to good ol' head to head racing?? Not exciting enough?

Ultimate fighting - if they personally need mayhem, the US Army and Marines needs cannon fodder in a couple of nasty dust pits in the mid East - that is if they can pass the IQ test.

Why don't we go back to bear baiting? rooster fights? Dog fights? Hey - let's just reopen the Roman Colosseum - and do mano o mano with swords or maces - or maybe bring on a few lions. There are religions that advocate rattlesnake handling - but these are only my opinions. The world is truly screwed up if they revert back - but then TV and video games are so violent that we seem to need something more personal - and real time to vent.

Obviously - I do agree with Arrowhead completely

This just ONE form of adrenaline junkies.

A never ending list.

This is a long line of things people do to "push the envelope" I never understood that phrase..any way

People do chit that not everyone will approve of.

I Love 1/4 mile drag racing! a sport now gone ,to 1/8 mile .

I like Burn outs ,Wheelies, Demolition Derby's & Monster Trucks.

Why someone would jump out a perfectly good Airplane or off a bridge still boggles my brain bone.

The Bottom line is this :

If you zoom in ... just a little bit you will see that most the people involved in these activities have more money than common sense.

Some people have to push the limits it part of their genetic make up .

Do you always want to blend into the crowd?

I feel bad for these people they are running out of ways to go up & over the top.

PS if you look @ the Gremlin ...... go ahead & look , I will wait......

It has stickers on the bottom of the car.
Like they did not know it was going " up over the top"
